Your educational history is a crucial element of your CV, which is why it should be taken seriously. Start by listing your education in reverse-chronological order, which means your most recent degree will sit at the top. If you have forgotten how to arrange your CV and where exactly you should insert your educational history, here is a quick refresher: Your contact details are first, and your personal statement is second. Next comes your work experience, followed by your education–then skills.
Listing your Associate Degree
Formatting and inserting your associate degree is simple, and you’ll notice that listing your other degrees is relatively similar. Your education history should be easy to read and understand.
Here is a standard template:
Associate in English
Saddleback Community College, Mission Viejo, CA September 2014 – May 2015
GPA: 3.4 (Optional)
It is commonplace to list your degree as an abbreviation on your CV; some common examples are:
- Associate in Arts is AA
- Associate of Fine Arts is AFA
- Associate in Nursing is AN
- Associate of Arts in Teaching is AAT
Listing your Bachelor’s Degree
Listing your bachelor’s degree is as easy as your associate degree and follows the same formula.
Here is an example:
Bachelor of Arts in English
Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ September 2018 – May 2020
GPA: 3.2 (Optional)
Abbreviations are frequently used for a bachelor’s degree instead of the full name. The two most common are:
- BA for Bachelor of Arts
- BS for Bachelor of Science
How to list degrees that are unfinished or in progress?
If you are still working towards a degree, then be sure to include it—just make sure that you clearly state that you have not yet completed it. The same goes for degrees left unfinished.
If you have an unfinished degree, format it as follows:
Bachelor of Arts in English
USC, Los Angeles, CA September 2019-2021
Completed 45 credits toward BA in English
If you are still in school, then list it as follows:
Bachelor of Arts in English (In progress)
USC, Los Angeles, CA
Due to complete in 2025
Tips for Recent Graduates
Recent graduates don’t often have a lot of work experience. To make up for what they lack, many recent graduates list academic achievements and awards instead. You may also choose to include any relevant clubs as well. If you are proud of your grade point average and need something to balance out your lack of work history, include your GPA. Lastly, if you’ve just graduated and have little experience, place your education before your work history.
